Building on the recent historiographical interest on family archives, the authors present a type of family archive prevalent in the Beira Alta region still in private hands. The authors describe two family archives to provide an overview of the typical documentation that comprise a Beira Alta family archive in a noble house. Finally, they produce an estimate of family archives that existed around 1850. The authors conclude by highlighting the historiographical relevance of this type of archives and by drawing attention to the risks such archives face today.
