Joana Damasceno was born in Coimbra in 1976 and has worked in a variety of professional roles in the area of culture. She holds a bachelor’s degree in the art history from the University of Coimbra Faculty of Letters (1999) and a post-graduate diploma in museology from the Faculty of Letters of the University of Porto, as well as a master’s degree in contemporary history from the University of Coimbra’s Faculty of Letters. After completing her professional training at the Porto Museum of Transport and Communications, she gained experience at the Conímbriga Monographic Museum, where she was responsible for the development of pedagogical materials for the museum’s educational service. Damasceno was also part of the educational team at the Figuera da Foz Centre for Arts and Shows and recently collaborated on the University of Coimbra UNESCO World Heritage candidacy project. She teaches at the primary level at Bissaya Barreto College in Coimbra and is a trainer in the areas of citizenship and the history of art. The present volume is an updated version of her master’s dissertation, which she defended in April 2007.
