O Autor nasceu em Lisboa (1961), onde viveu e estudou até ao segundo ano do seu curso de Engenharia Mecânica, no Instituto Superior Técnico. Mudou-se então para Coimbra, onde terminou o curso (1985), no Departamento de Engenharia Mecânica da Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade de Coimbra (DEM/FCTUC), e tem prosseguido a carreira académica, doutorando-se na Especialidade de Aerodinâmica (1997). Do seu percurso pedagógico, realça-se o interesse continuado pelo estudo, o ensino e a aplicação da matemática em engenharia mecânica, onde lecionou disciplinas de engenharia com forte componente quantitativa (Resistência de Materiais, Mecânica dos Fluidos, Turbomáquinas, Máquinas Térmicas, Aerodinâmica), e de matemática aplicada (Matemática Aplicada à Engenharia Mecânica, Modelação de Fenómenos Físicos, Probabilidades e Estatística), de pré e pós-graduação, das quais resultaram publicações pedagógicas, como o livro “Probabilidades e Estatística para Engenharia” (2008). Realizou análises curriculares do curso de Engenharia Mecânica e empenhou-se em incentivar a ligação entre os Departamentos de Engenharia Mecânica e de Matemática da FCTUC, como Coordenador de Processos de Auto-Avaliação, Acreditação pela Ordem dos Engenheiros, e de Bolonha. O seu percurso de investigação iniciou-se no estudo da turbulência de escoamentos (Anemometria de filme quente, Teoria Estatística da Turbulência) e embrenhou-se depois, até 2007, pela investigação de diferentes fenómenos físicos em incêndios florestais, com realce para a modelação da propagação de frentes de chamas de baixa e média intensidade. Incluiu, ainda, dedicações menores, isoladas ou periódicas, a: motores-foguete a propergol sólido; condicionamento do ar em veículos de transporte de passageiros; Engenharia Acústica; e Manutenção. Atualmente, reestrutura a sua investigação nas áreas de: Energia e Ambiente; Engenharia Acústica; e Gestão e Ecologia Industrial (Análise de Atribuição aplicada à gestão sustentável de empresas).

The author Jorge André was born in Lisbon in 1961, where he lived and studied until the second year of his undergraduate studies in mechanical engineering at the Higher Technical Institute, after which time he moved to Coimbra, where he completed his degree in 1985 at the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the University of Coimbra’s Faculty of Science and Technology. From there, he continued his academic career and obtained a PhD in aerodynamics in 1997. His academic career thus far is characterised by a marked interest in the study, teaching, and application of mathematics in mechanical engineering, an area in which he has taught classes with a strong quantitative component - on topics such as material science, fluid mechanics, turbo-mechanics, thermal mechanics, and aerodynamics. In the field of applied mathematics, he has taught Mathematics applied to Mechanical Engineering, the Modelling of Physical Phenomena, and Probability and Statistics. He has also taught others in undergraduate and post-graduate studies, leading to academic publications such as the book, <em>Probabilidades e Estatística para Engenharia</em> [“Probabilities and Statistics for Engineering”] (2008). André initiated an analysis of the curriculum in the mechanical engineering program and has been a driving force in encouraging the creation of an exchange between the Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Mathematics at the University of Coimbra’s Faculty of Science and Technology via his position as Coordinator of Self-Assessment and Accreditation at the Institute of Engineers and the Bologna Process. His scientific research began with the study of turbulence flow (anemometry of hot film, statistical theory of turbulence), and, from that time to 2007, he conducted research on different physical phenomena related to forest fires, in hopes of establishing a propagation model of high and low intensity fire lines. His research has also included, albeit to a minor and more sporadic degree, work on solid-fuel rocket engines, air flow control in public transport, acoustic engineering, and maintenance. At present he has re-directed his research energies toward such topics as: energy and the environment, acoustic engineering, and industrial management and ecology (attribution analysis applied to sustainable business management).
