Licenciou-se em Engenharia Química pela Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade de Coimbra em 1989. Entre 1989 e 1991 trabalhou na indústria química (NARES) como responsável pelo Laboratório de Controlo de Qualidade. Em 1991 iniciou funções como Assistente Estagiário no Departamento de Engenharia Química da FCTUC e seguidamente foi Assistente Convidada entre 1995 e 2006. Encontra-se a concluir a sua tese de doutoramento que versa a modelização da linha de fabrico da Pasta para Papel e tem vários artigos científicos publicados nesta área de estudo. Neste âmbito participou em diversos projetos de investigação co-financiados pela indústria papeleira nacional. Recebeu duas menções honrosas por trabalhos apresentados em conferências internacionais (1989 e 2003). Durante o tempo em que foi docente lecionou, entre outras, as aulas teórico-práticas das disciplinas de Estequiometria Industrial (das licenciaturas em Química Industrial e Engenharia Química), Balanços e Simulação de Processos e Projeto Industrial (da licenciatura em Engenharia Química) e Balanços de Matéria e Energia (da licenciatura em Engenharia do Ambiente). Foi neste âmbito que surgiu o interesse na elaboração do presente manual.

Ana Paula Venâncio Egas took a degree in chemical engineering at the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra in 1989. Between 1989 and 1991, she worked in the chemical industry (NARES) as head of the Quality Control Laboratory. In 1991, she started working as graduate assistant in the Department of Chemical Engineering of the Faculty of Science and Technology at the University of Coimbra and thereafter became an invited graduate assistant lecturer between 1995 and 2006. Currently, Ana Paula Venâncio Egas is completing her doctoral thesis, which models the production line of pulp for paper, an area of study in which she has already published several articles and participated in a variety of research projects co-financed by the national paper industry. In addition, she has also received two honourable mentions for work presented at international conferences in 1989 and 2003. While working as a teacher, she has lectured in practical-theoretical classes in the following areas, among others: Industrial Stoichiometry (for industrial chemistry and chemical engineering courses at the undergraduate level), Project and Industrial Process Assessment and Simulation (for undergraduate chemical engineering), and Assessment of Material and Energy (for undergraduate environmental engineering). It was in the lattermost sphere that her interest arose in the preparation of this current manual.
