É Professor Catedrático do Departamento de Química da Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade de Coimbra (FCTUC) e coordenador do Laboratório de Bioespetroscopia e Crioespetroscopia Moleculares do Centro de Química de Coimbra. É membro da Academia Europeia das Artes, Ciências e Humanidades (Paris), integra os Corpos Editoriais de 4 revistas científicas internacionais, a Comissão Diretiva da Associação Mundial dos cientistas que se dedicam à realização de estudos de substâncias isoladas em matrizes criogénicas inertes e Vice-Presidente da Comissão Científica Permanente do Congresso Europeu de Espetroscopia Molecular. É Editor da revista científica internacional “Journal of Molecular Structure” (Elsevier, Amsterdão). Ao longo da sua carreira tem ocupado várias posições de gestão e direção científica na Universidade de Coimbra, incluindo a presidência do Conselho Pedagógico e a vice-presidência dos Conselhos Diretivo e Científico da FCTUC, e as presidências do Instituto de Investigação Interdisciplinar da Universidade de Coimbra e do Departamento de Química da FCTUC. Foi também Presidente da Divisão de Química-Física da Sociedade Portuguesa de Química. Em 2002, recebeu o Prémio “Journals Grant for International Authors”, da Royal Society of Chemistry, e, em 2004 e 2005, foi um dos ca. 70 cientistas portugueses galardoados com o Prémio de Excelência Científica da Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia e Ministério da Ciência e do Ensino Superior de Portugal, sendo um dos 12 químicos portugueses que receberam tal distinção. É autor ou editor de cerca de duas dezenas de livros, dedicados a temas científicos de interesse do “grande público” ou mais especializados, e autor de ~250 artigos científicos em revistas científicas de elevado factor de impacto no domínio da Química. O seu trabalho recebeu mais de 2000 citações e alguns dos seus livros são atualmente utilizados como manuais universitários no país e no estrangeiro. Organizou mais de 25 reuniões científicas internacionais (tendo sido Diretor de dois Institutos de Estudos Avançados patrocinados pela OTAN), e supervisionou ca. 30 doutoramentos e pós-doutoramentos e mais de 50 mestrados e estágios científicos de licenciatura. Desde 1994 tem estado envolvido em mais de 20 projetos internacionais de investigação científica (liderando 12, incluindo a coordenação nacional de uma rede de laboratórios ibero-americanos que integra cientistas de 8 países diferentes), num total de financiamento superior a 2.200.000 Euros. Os seus principais interesses científicos centram-se na investigação da estrutura molecular, reatividade foto e termoquímicas e processos de relaxação de energia intramolecular em compostos orgânicos isolados em matrizes criogénicas e em fase condensada a baixa temperatura. Como técnicas principais de estudo utiliza as espetroscopias de infravermelho e de Raman, e métodos teóricos mecânico-quânticos. Rui Fausto M. R. S. Rui Fausto Martins Ribeiro da Silva Lourenço is a full professor in the Chemistry Department at the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra (FCTUC). He coordinates the Molecular Biospectroscopy and Cryospectroscopy Laboratory of the Coimbra Chemistry Centre. A member of the European Academy of Arts, Sciences, and Humanities (Paris), he is part of the editorial board of four international scientific journals and of the Management Committee of the Worldwide Association of Scientists that carries out research on the study of isolated substances in the inert cryogenic matrix. He Rui Fausto is also the vice president of the Permanent Scientific Commission of the European Molecular Spectroscopy Convention. He is the editor of the international <em>Journal of Molecular Structure</em> (Elsvier, Amesterdam). Throughout his career he has held several managerial and administrative positions at the University of Coimbra, namely those of president of the Pedagogical Council, vice president of the Scientific and Management Council of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra (FCTUC), and president of the Interdisciplinary Research Institute and the Chemistry department at FCTUC. He was also president of the Physics and Chemistry division of the Portuguese Chemistry Society. In 2000 he received the award “Journals Grant for International Authors” from the Royal Society of Chemistry, and in 2004 and 2005 he was one of the 70 Portuguese people that won the Award for Scientific Excellence given by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, being one of the 12 that won in chemistry. He is the author or editor of approximately 20 books on relevant scientific topics both for the general public and for specialists, and of approximately 250 articles published in scientific journals of great impact in the world of chemistry. His work has been quoted more than two thousand times and his books are used as university textbooks both in Portugal and abroad. He has organized more than 25 international scientific conferences (having being the director of two Advanced Studies Institutes sponsored by NATO) and supervised approximately 30 doctoral and post-doctoral theses and more than 50 master’s theses scientific internships at undergraduate level. Since 1994 Rui Fausto has worked on more than 20 international scientific research projects (leading 12 of them, including the coordination in Portugal of an Iberian-American network of laboratories with scientists from eight countries), with more than €2,200,000 raised in research funding. His main scientific interests are in the research of molecular structures, photo- and thermochemistry reactivity, and the process of relaxation of intramolecular energy in isolated organic compounds in inert cryogenic matrixes and in a condensed phase and at low temperatures. His main research techniques are infrared and Raman spectroscopies and the quantum-mechanic theoretical methods.
