António Arnaut nasceu em 1936, em Cumieira, Penela. Advogado, político e escritor. Activista contra a ditadura desde a juventude, membro da Acção Socialista (1965), candidato a deputado pela Oposição Democrática (1969), fundador do Partido Socialista (1973). Após a Revolução de Abril foi deputado, vice-presidente da Assembleia da República e Ministro dos Assuntos Sociais. É autor da lei que criou o Serviço Nacional de Saúde (1978/79), considerada a grande reforma social da democracia, o que lhe tem valido várias homenagens: Prémio Corino de Andrade, Medalha de Ouro dos Serviços Distintos e Prémio Nacional de Saúde do Ministério da Saúde, Sócio Honorário da Academia Portuguesa de Medicina, Medalha de Mérito, ouro, da Ordem dos Médicos, além de outras distinções. A Universidade de Coimbra conferiu‑lhe, por proposta da FEUC, o grau de Doutor Honoris Causa (2014), em reconhecimento da sua acção como impulsionador do SNS.  A. Arnaut foi convidado a ingressar na Maçonaria em 1972, mas só foi iniciado depois da Revolução. Mestre em 1976, atingiu o grau 33 em 1992. Foi venerável e orador da sua Loja, representante à Grande Dieta, membro do Conselho da Ordem e Presidente do Grande Tribunal Maçónico. Como Grão-Mestre (2002-2005) praticou uma política de abertura da Maçonaria à comunidade, recebendo no Palácio Maçónico o Presidente da República, o Presidente da Assembleia da República e outras entidades. É obreiro e Venerável honorário de várias Lojas do GOL. Presidente da Liga Portuguesa dos Direitos do Homem e do Conselho Regional de Coimbra da Ordem dos Advogados. Fundador e Presidente da Associação Portuguesa de Escritores Juristas. É agraciado com a Medalha de Mérito Cultural e Político do Município de Penela, Medalha de Ouro do Município de Coimbra e Medalha de Honra da Ordem dos Advogados. É condecorado com a Ordem da Liberdade (Grande Oficial, em 2004, e Grã Cruz, em 2016). No seu 80º aniversário, a Câmara de Penela deu o seu nome à Biblioteca local.  Estreou-se como escritor em 1954, mas só depois de deixar a política activa (1983) é que pode dedicar mais tempo à escrita, sua paixão de juventude.  Com 30 títulos publicados (poesia, ficção e ensaio), A. Arnaut assume-se como escritor civicamente comprometido, que considera a literatura como “a expressão da sua própria humanidade e da Humanidade toda”. António Arnaut was born in 1936, in Cumieira, Penela. A lawyer, politician, and writer, Arnaut was an activist against the dictatorship from his youth, a member of the Socialist Action (1965), a candidate for deputy of the Democratic Opposition (1969), and founder of the Socialist Party (1973). After the April Revolution he was deputy vice-president of the Assembly of the Republic and Minister of Social Affairs. He is the author of the law that created the National Health Service (1978/79), considered the great social reform of democracy, which has earned him numerous honours: the Corino de Andrade Prize, the Gold Medal for Distinguished Services and the National Health Prize of the Ministry of Health, Honorary Member of the Portuguese Academy of Medicine, and the Medal of Merit (gold) of the Order of Doctors, among other distinctions. The University of Coimbra awarded him, on a proposal from FEUC, the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa (2014), in recognition of his work as a driving force behind the NHS. A. Arnaut was invited to join Freemasonry in 1972, but was only initiated after the Revolution. After becoming a Master in 1976, he reached grade 33 in 1992. He was a Venerable and a speaker in his Lodge, representing the Grand Diet, a member of the Council of the Order and President of the Grand Masonic Court. As Grand Master (2002-2005) he practiced a policy of opening Freemasonry to the community, receiving in the Masonic Palace the President of the Republic, the President of the Assembly of the Republic, and other entities. He is an honorary worker and Venerable from several GOL Lodges; president of the Portuguese League of Human Rights and of the Coimbra Regional Council of the Portuguese Bar Association; and founder and president of the Portuguese Association of Legal Writers. He is awarded the Medal of Cultural and Political Merit of the Municipality of Penela, the Gold Medal of the Municipality of Coimbra and the Medal of Honour of the Portuguese Bar Association. He is decorated with the Order of Freedom (Grand Officer, in 2004, and Great Cross, in 2016). On its 80th anniversary, the Municipality of Penela gave his name to the local library. He made his debut as a writer in 1954, but only after leaving active politics in 1983 could he dedicate more time to writing, his youthful passion. With 30 published titles (poetry, fiction and essay), A. Arnaut has adopted the role of a civically committed writer, who considers literature as "the expression of his own humanity and of all humanity".
