Boris Groys Philosophical Conversations - Towards Self-Design
Boris GroysCatarina Pombo Nabais
Boris Groys is a world-known philosopher, preeminent contemporary art and media theorist and critic, and an internationally renowned expert on Russian avant-garde and Soviet-era Art. He is the author of an important work, having written about diverse subjects such as modern and contemporary art, art relation to power, the institution of museum, the media, the digital or the archive. Catarina Pombo Nabais, a Deleuzian philosopher, has interviewed him with special focus on his concept of self-design, a major concept for understanding life and contemporary world. Over six conversations, they have freely discussed a vast range of topics such as politics, economy, aesthetics, technology, metaphysics or philosophy of science. “BG – People believe that they are free, ontologically free, and that is not the case. We are living in ontological and practical un-freedom, slavery, we are born as slaves of the state (…). CPN – That is why you use the word “design”, to express the constructive action that is needed in the creation of individual freedom (…). BG – Yes. I design myself as free (...). To be born is a political act, an act of self-inscription into the political, bureaucratic order. To go out of it, I cannot appeal to any original form of subjectivity. I have to invent it.” This work was conceived in the form of successive conversations between Boris Groys and Catarina Pombo Nabais, both specialists in the field of Philosophy.
